Men's Basketball Team Forges Friendships in Costa Rica

The Franklin & Marshall men鈥檚 basketball team isn鈥檛 just striving for victory on the court. Teammates also are making memories, forming connections, and building skills that will last a lifetime. 

in early August, providing an opportunity for players to bond while broadening their horizons and stepping out of their comfort zones by exploring a new country.

鈥淭his trip definitely improved my overall experience at F&M, as it was a great opportunity to strengthen my connections with my teammates, experience a new place and improve our skills 鈥 both as a team and individually,鈥 said Asad Syed 鈥27. 

After three days of team workouts and culture-building discussions on campus, the team set off for a week that included engaging in community service and testing out their strategy in a few competitive games. 

鈥淚t was great to have extra time on the court with our players,鈥 said Nick Nichay, head coach. 鈥淲e played well and came out with two victories, while also experimenting with some new lineups and concepts. The opportunity to take a trip like this is a truly special experience.鈥 

The team also took in the sights, touring the city of San Jose, visiting La Paz Waterfalls Gardens, Arenal Volcano, and Baldi Hot Springs, and concluding their trip with time on the beach in Punta Leona.

鈥淲hat makes basketball so cool is that it can take us to different countries and allow us to meet our best friends and create lifelong memories that are unforgettable,鈥 said Logan Satlow 鈥26.

In addition to experiencing a new culture and giving back to the community, this memorable trip provided an opportunity for the team to get to know each other and build trust, qualities that are essential to improving their performance on the court. 

鈥淭his trip deepened the camaraderie between my teammates and coaches, leaving us fully prepared to have each other鈥檚 backs in the upcoming season,鈥 said Carter Lawrence 鈥27. 

鈥淲hen you share experiences and moments like we all did in Costa Rica, it really strengthens our bonds as a team,鈥 Nichay said. 鈥淚 know they created memories that will last a lifetime. It will no doubt make our team stronger and more connected.鈥
