Musicologist and pianist Dr. Jarl Hulbert has been on the music faculty at the University of Maryland, College Park; St. Mary鈥檚 College of Maryland; West Chester University of Pennsylvania; Towson University鈥檚 FTP Program; and the Community College of Baltimore County, in addition to his current role at Franklin and Marshall College. A specialist in the early Nineteenth Century, Dr. Hulbert鈥檚 ground-breaking dissertation on the historical lineage of the Classical Viennese School was inspired, in part, by his studies at the Vienna State Academy as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar.
Currently President of the Non-Profit Thomas F. Hulbert Music Institute and Executive Director of the associated Thomas F. Hulbert International Piano Competition (previously the William Knabe Competition), Dr. Hulbert also served as Competition Coordinator of the world-renowned William Kapell International Piano Competition and Executive Director of the William Kapell Young Artist Piano Competition. Dr. Hulbert also works on a regular basis with piano students enrolled in the gifted and talented program at Maryland鈥檚 Artist Music Academy, for which he is a founder and director.
Dr. Hulbert鈥檚 other professional activities include adjudication roles at various competitions, such as the Silk Road Festival Piano Competition in Xi鈥檃n, China in 2014; and he has been a featured speaker at conferences and festivals in the US and abroad. He has also served in an administrative capacity for many events, including the Ivy International Festival at George Mason University, the American Handel Society, the University of Maryland鈥檚 centennial Copland Festival, and the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center鈥檚 American Piano Project. Dr. Hulbert鈥檚 recent scholarly work includes an expansion of his dissertation (to be published by the German firm Hainholz) and editing/revising the works of Thomas F. Hulbert, including 鈥淪ix Rhapsodic Sketches鈥� which were premiered at Carnegie Hall in July 2026.
